David Kimbrough and Sherena Boyce

Chulahoma, MS 1996

As David Kimbrough plays the blues at his father Junior Kimbrough’s famous juke joint, he is momentarily distracted by Sherena Boyce, who calls herself the “Number One Juke Joint Dancer.” Boyce is the daughter of hill country blues player R.L. Boyce and often performs onstage with her father and other hill country blues artists. This moment is the first night David and Sherena met, and they went on to be very close over the years. In fact, Boyce was with David in his final days as he died in 2019, and continues to be a champion for his legacy as an important hill country blues artist.
